Radfield Home Care, founded in Shrewsbury, Shropshire by siblings Alex Green and Dr Hannah MacKechnie in 2008, has grown from a single local operation into a national network of independently run care businesses. That experience highlights several lessons for founders considering franchising as a route to growth.
Franchising is often seen as a straightforward way to grow a business. In practice, it requires careful balance - local owners need the freedom to build their businesses but the standards that define the brand must remain consistent across the entire network.
Here, Dr Hannah MacKechnie, co-founder and Managing Director of Radfield Home Care, shares five lessons from building and managing a national franchise network.
Choose people carefully
The success of a franchise network ultimately depends on the people running each business.
Franchising works because the individual leading the operation locally has genuine ownership of its success. Their investment, reputation and connection to the community are directly tied to the performance of the business.
That also means recruitment must be handled carefully. Not everyone who is capable of running a team will thrive as a franchise partner. The most successful operators tend to combine commercial drive with strong people management skills and the ability to build relationships locally.
Taking time to find the right partners is far more important than expanding quickly.
Set clear, non-negotiable standards
A common misunderstanding about franchising is that it allows a light-touch approach to oversight. In reality, strong central standards are essential.
Operational processes, regulatory compliance and service delivery should be clearly defined from the outset. When those frameworks are in place, franchise partners are not starting from scratch but are building on a system that already works.
Consistency also protects the reputation of the network. When customers encounter the brand in different locations, the experience should feel familiar and reliable.
Invest in support from the start
Launching a franchise network means committing to long-term support for each partner. That support needs to cover several areas such as operational guidance, training, marketing and business performance management all play a role in helping local businesses succeed. In regulated sectors such as care, compliance oversight is equally important.
Building the right support structure early makes a significant difference. Franchise partners who feel supported are more confident in developing their business and maintaining the standards expected across the network.
Allow local ownership to work
One of the strengths of franchising is that local operators bring their own knowledge, networks and energy to the business.
While the core model and standards are set centrally, franchise partners should have the freedom to build their team, develop local relationships and grow their client base in ways that reflect their community.
The role of the franchisor is to provide a strong framework and guidance while allowing those local strengths to come through.
Grow steadily and protect quality
Franchising can accelerate growth quickly, but rapid expansion is not always the right strategy.
Selling territories too quickly or bringing in partners who are not the right fit can create problems later on. Taking a more measured approach allows the franchisor to maintain standards and ensure each new business receives the support it needs.
At Radfield, that has meant prioritising consistency across the network. Several franchisees have achieved the CQC’s highest ‘Outstanding’ rating, while others are rated ‘Good’, and franchisee satisfaction has been recognised with three consecutive Workbuzz Five-Star awards.
Strong franchise networks are built over time through consistent performance, trusted partnerships and shared values. Without this foundation, there is little value in the business to scale.
Franchising can be a powerful way to scale a business, but it requires patience and careful leadership. When the right partners are in place and the right systems support them, a network can grow while maintaining the culture and standards that made the business successful in the first place.
