According to the Collins dictionary the Definition of ‘gut instinct’ is; an instinctive feeling, as opposed to an opinion based on facts. So why do so many successful leaders and entrepreneurs trust their gut instinct implicitly? Faye Cox is a Mindset & Confidence Coach who works with mums to find balance in their life. Faye spent most of her life thinking she’s not good enough. This was thanks to a combination of her upbringing where she was taught “good girls are seen and not heard” and working in a male-dominated environment that threw her to one side when she became a mum Sara explain how as humans we have 3 brains. Our mind, our heart and our gut which are governed by our thoughts, emotions and feelings.  Our head makes decisions based on the information it is given during any given experience or situation. It’s where our logical mind lives that makes decisions based on facts. Our heart is where our emotional thoughts are created, and this is where all logic goes out the window and we base our decision making purely on what our emotions are telling us.  Our Gut, however, takes a little bit of both and takes into account both logic and emotional thoughts, giving us a much more balanced decision-making tool. So, it’s no wonder those who have knowledge of this are trusting their gut instinct instead of their head or their heart alone! Unfortunately, humans have been programmed to base important decisions on facts and the data that presents itself, giving us little or no reason to hold off that instant decision-making process to tune in to our gut instinct. However, by learning to tune in to our gut feeling, we can make increasingly better decisions in minutes. Now, most of our top leaders and entrepreneurs are already tuning in to this more accurate way of making important decisions, having learnt how to listen to what their gut feeling is telling them in all areas of life.  Here’s how you too can tune in to your gut instinct and make it work for you;
  • Find some quiet time. Our busy lives aren't designed to support us to listen to our inner voice. Taking time to sit and ‘be’ is really important. It helps us to reconnect with ourselves so we can start listening out for what our head, heart and gut are telling us.
  • Pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you. Your gut feeling generally sits, not surprisingly in the gut area of your body. You may feel it in other areas too, but mainly it will be there. When you tune in to the body you will notice that it tells you everything you need to know. We have been conditioned to ignore what we feel and always go with the logical reason, but now its time to reconnect with your true feelings.
  • Start becoming more self-aware. Stay conscious to what’s going on both internally and externally. We spend so much of our lives on auto-pilot, but in order to tune in to our gut feeling, we need to be conscious of what’s happening and be in the moment with ourselves on a regular basis.
  • Start a journal. Journaling is a great way to become aware of the thoughts and feelings that you are having about certain situations. It gives you the space to challenge those thoughts and tune in to how you’re currently making those all important decisions. You can then tap into your gut instinct, by paying attention to what your body is telling you as you write and see how it feels.
  • Use evidence-based thinking. Think back to the last time you had a gut feeling about something and ignored it, what happened? Then, think back to the time before that, What happened in that situation? This will give you the confidence to start listening and tuning in to that feeling and trusting it the next time you’re faced with a big decision.
