The Impact Of Bridging The Economical, Technological And Emotional Gap Between Gen X & Gen Z By Lorraine Bellot
Business is one area of life where the generation gap seems cavernous. This is never more obvious than when you’re raising children alongside developing your career or business. But can parenthood actually help you develop and progress your working life?Actually, there can be many positives to involving and learning from your children when it comes to your career. It’s a benefit that can work two ways, because our children - or any significantly younger person you may work with - can teach us as much as we can teach them.Even the process of having a child can help progress your business - because your perspective on the world changes and enhances your view, the opportunities that lay ahead and your motivation to achieve them. But how do we go about bridging the gap and turning a potential problem into a possible perk?Co-Founder of Black Business Recommendation, Lorraine Bellot answers for us.Firstly, we listen
Sometimes it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that having years of experience means that those who are younger - and with fewer demonstrable relevant skills - have nothing to offer. Yet there are some areas that Generation Z tend to have a more natural and organic knowledge of, such as social media. It’s important to hear their thoughts on how the various social media platforms can be an effective tool for your business, and how you can best appeal to a younger demographic.
Embrace the differences
Discuss the changes in how business operates and communicates - and learn from each method. While your Gen Z child can educate you on up-and-coming trends and the latest technology, you can educate them on the more traditional protocols that may have less emphasis placed on them in today’s world (but they are still valid!). Show your child that there are effective forms of communication other than technology to grow your business, so that they have more strings to their bow. Celebrate the synergy of old and new
The world of business is constantly evolving, but there are some lessons that are universal. It’s good to have a discussion about why some methods have changed, some have stayed the same, and still others take a dual approach. An important lesson for Generation Z is that the basic principles of business ideas tend to come back around in time - even if the method or platform changes. Educate your child in the tools and processes Gen X society used in business then how the old way still has a legacy and is still relevant to today's society, plus show how both old and new can work in tandem.
Lead by example - and that means learning tooShow by example how to start a business and involve them as much as possible. If they’re old enough, appoint them as an advisor; they're the best people to have as they have a different perspective of the world and knowledge of a different demographic. Show them the importance of hearing all voices within a business - by listening to theirs. Equally, help them to respect and understand the position of others within their workplace, and to always be open to advice.
Remember - age is nothing but a number!
Introduce your child at an early age to your business and the processes on how to start and grow a sustainable business and leave a legacy. Allow them to help out in any way they can, as this will stay with them as they grow and give them confidence to be entrepreneurial when they get older. Most of all, remember to enjoy sharing your working world with your Generation Z friends! Studies estimate that the workforce will be 40% Gen Z by 2025, so they are here to stay!
