Navigating The Crippling Expectations Of Digital Availability By Lisa Johnson

Lisa Johnson is a multi-seven figure Business Strategist who specialises in teaching online business owners how to create passive income models. Lisa realised that as an online business owner, and even more crucially, an online business owner who taught others how to make money online, visibility was everything.

She knew that succeeding online would not happen unless she embraced that visibility. No matter if she had the best offer, the best service or the best product, nobody could know, like or trust her, and therefore buy from her, if they don’t know she existed. But with this need for accessibility and visibility came a less than welcome flipside. When did she actually put up her metaphorical closed sign?

Lisa developed a set of rules that allowed her to put boundaries of her choice in place

  1. She created boundaries around what she wanted to post. “Don’t be afraid to merge your business life and personal life in your online presence, but only if your personal life dovetails with your business.” Lisa’s business is all about reducing working hours and moving to a one-to-many model, so shots of her on holiday with her kids tie in perfectly.
  2. Lisa says that repurposing content is a great way to get more from less. This way, an Instagram blog you have published can be used in numerous other channels thereby creating the impression that you are being seen everywhere without actually being everywhere and freeing up more time for you.
  3. Use your Out of Office! So many business owners see this as a “corporate” thing to do, but it immediately stops the email sender’s expectation of receiving an immediate reply.
  4. She believes that every interruption that does not bring value has a huge impact on her productivity, so being “universally available” was not feasible if she wanted to grow her business, despite the expectations that are often drilled into us about being available at all times if we want to be successful.
  5. Be honest and sincere. Lisa has found that over the course of her business journey, being authentic, especially when she wasn’t feeling so great, had numerous positive effects. Mainly because her clients would empathise and resonate with how she was feeling. She says that often a thirty second live, just explaining that she’s not available for a day or two as she deals with something really hits home with her audience, but also builds trust between them and her.

Lisa says “When the world shrunk to the phone in our hand or the keyboard in front of us, a seismic shift occurred. Not quite overnight but in the space of a few months. Our accessibility and availability no longer became our choice, but we can, and must, take that choice back.”

Remember why you do what you do, what your priorities are and that you, the ones closest to you and your health are the most important things.”
