Summer is finally here, and we want to enjoy these long-awaited for sunny days! But the truth is that the sun can play havoc with the health of our hair, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. So, make sure you follow these top hair care tips from Consultant Trichologist Eva Proudman FIT IAT, from UKhairconsultants.com to protect your hair and scalp during these glorious summer months, keeping it happy and healthy!  Use an SPF We all use SPF on our bodies, but the sun is equally damaging to our hair and scalp. The sun’s rays weaken the hair’s protein structure, cause dehydration and dryness and reducing the natural elasticity of the hair making it more prone to breakage. If your hair is chemically coloured or treated with a chemical, to straighten or curl it in the sun can be doubly harsh.  The hair has undergone a chemical change and that, combined with the UV rays of the sun, can cause colour changes as well as the hair becoming dry and difficult to manage. To help protect your hair from the sun use an SPF for the hair, you can find these on the high street and online.  My recommendations include the following: the Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, Wella’s Invigo Sun UV Hair Colour Protection Spray, and Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer. If you have hair loss or thinning and the scalp is exposed to the sun, do be careful as it will burn really quickly.  I see lots of scalps with sun damage in my clinic and sadly some of them need surgery as they can develop into skin cancer.  I like the Heliocare 50 sunscreen for the scalp, it is a mineral based product and safe to use on the scalp and around the hairline. Last but not least, don’t forget a hat to protect from the sun; with so many to choose from there is sure to be one to suit your style and needs! Protection from Saltwater and Chlorine Salt and chlorinated water can dry out your hair and cause damage, but there are lots of ways you can protect your hair including:
  • Use a protective conditioning mask before you go into the water to coat and protect the hair making it less easy for the chlorine and salt to penetrate into the hair’s core.
  • Coconut oil is a good alternative to a mask, again it will repel the water and provide protection from the drying effects.
  • If you have long hair, tie it up to keep the more fragile ends out of the water as much as possible.
  • Wear a swimming cap.
  • Wash your hair when you come out of the pool and reapply a mask with sunscreen or your SPF protection spray.
  • Hair can take on a greenish tinge after swimming in a chlorinated pool, this is due to the copper algaecides that are used to prevent algae growing in the pool water.  To avoid this problem, you can wear a swimming cap, keep your hair out of the pool water or wash the hair well immediately after you get out of the water.
Summer hair care regime The heat and humidity of the summer can sometimes leave your scalp feeling oily and sweaty and your hair out of condition. It is really key to wash your hair and scalp regularly in the summer months to keep both clean and well-balanced.  The scalp boasts the largest amount of oil glands compared to anywhere else in the body, add to that the sweat from our sweat glands and you can see how moist the scalp can become! This helps to trap much more dirt and debris which builds up on the hair. I recommend washing the hair every day or every other day where possible, to keep the hair and scalp balanced and clean.  Don’t forget to condition too, especially on long hair where the ends will be more weathered and drier, so they really do need that hydration as does the rest of the hair if it has been exposed to the sun all day. In summer a prewash conditioner treatment can be really beneficial, as can a post-wash hair mask to keep that very thirsty hair really hydrated. When our hair is wet it is at its most vulnerable, use a wide tooth comb to gently tease out any tangles, working from tip to root to avoid over vigorous brushing and tugging.  Remember that in summer the elements of sun, sea and chlorine all dry out the hair making it much easier to break, so do be gentle and take your time with the wide tooth comb. Try to dial down the heat with styling tools, giving your hair a few days off each week can be really beneficial, and remember over 180 degrees the hair will burn and become damaged and broken. Summer diet With so many yummy foods in Summer it should be easy to eat a healthy well-balanced diet, make sure you have enough protein and add in some of the massive variety of vegetables and fruits to really ensure that the hair gets great nutrition for optimum hair health. The hair is made up of 10% water and needs hydration, so make sure you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Hair styling If you have long hair, get a good trim before you go on holiday or start swimming in the sea or pool as the ends of long hair are more weathered and subject to splitting and breaking.  Once we have a split-end the damage continues to run up the hair shaft and has to be cut out, so a good trim first will help to minimise and prevent this from happening. Book an appointment for when you get home from holiday too for a hydrating mask, another trim and any colour correction that might be needed, especially on blonde hair where the tone can really show that green from swimming pools or yellow from the effects of the sun.
