The hot summer months are a perfect time for us all to slow down, have a think about the stress of everyday life, and make some changes to help us cope with the demands of the coming winter. The heat itself makes us feel drowsy and the days are light and long. But in some ways, it's time to get busy, as the summer is the ideal time to take stock and make change. Here are five reasons why by Dr Deborah Lee, Dr Fox Online Pharmacy. Business often slows down in the summer It’s well known that sales tend to slump in the summer months. According to SumAll, shop sales fall by 30% between December and July. This is because children are on school holidays, parents are working from home, and many people are away on their annual vacation. People also start saving for the expensive Christmas festivities to come. But a quiet time in a business is also an opportunity. Those at work can be even more productive with fewer meetings and interruptions. Those projects on the back burner can now get a look in. Staff can work more holistically taking their breaks and going home on time, which is great for staff morale. Being able to maintain a proper work-life balance for once, is a good thing and helps workers value their role – all good for staff retention. End of the academic year School’s out for another year - and it’s also the end of the university year. Teaching staff can heave a sigh of relief, but not for long, before the rigours of the next year are upon them. But in the summer vacation, it’s time to take stock. What were the achievements, the highs and the successes of last year? And what didn’t go so well? It’s time for reflection. How can they take this forward to have an even more successful year next year? It’s time to set new challenges and goals while those school gates are still locked. Good opportunity to declutter It's always a challenge to do a good declutter, but there are so many benefits, and why not take advantage of doing this in the summer when the weather is good, the days are longer, and we all have a bit more time on our hands? Living in a chaotic environment adds to stress, and makes people moody, irritable, depressed and anxious. Once the decluttering is over,  people will find they concentrate better, can finish tasks more easily and are more productive. Their sleep and energy levels will improve. Getting rid of objects you’ve been attached to, helps relieve the emotional burden of the past. It's now possible to put this behind you and move on. It’s a good time for a business review It may surprise you that August is a recommended month to review your business. Email volume is less in the summer, as both staff and clients are on holiday. It’s an ideal opportunity to reorganise and streamline work processes, update contact lists, and spreadsheets and go through your accounts. Maybe now is an ideal time to do some social media posting and blogging, jobs which are always put on the back burner. It’s also a good time to be networking with your clients. It’s also a great idea to take the time in the summer to say thank you to your employees. Having a staff barbecue, picnic, or night out can do wonders for staff morale. A perfect time to take your own summer holiday Many research studies have shown the physical and mental health benefits of taking a holiday. And when better to take it than when the sun is shining, and the weather is good? Holidays mean rest and relaxation, which lowers stress levels. Over time, those who have regular holidays suffer from less heart disease than those who don’t. Taking a vacation also improves your mental health, lowering symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. After a holiday, you will sleep better and have a more positive outlook. Holidays are often a good time for strengthening relationships and can help reduce burnout. Having a holiday in the summer helps you prepare for the busier autumn/winter to come. Final thoughts There are many reasons why the summer months are a great time to slow down and reevaluate your working life and work-life balance. It’s always hard to implement change, but saving this for the summer makes great sense. Getting the team onboard and taking small steps, at a time when everyone tends to be more cheerful, relaxed and happy, can be highly advantageous.  Here comes summer. Here comes better organisation, feeling more refreshed, a more positive outlook, and a united workforce ready for the next productive twelve months.   References: https://www.entrepreneur.com/living/the-summer-slowdown-is-a-good-time-to-reevaluate-business/453813 https://www.monster.com/career-advice/article/summer-slowdown-myth-0804 https://www.gesseducation.com/gess-talks/articles/end-of-year-a-time-to-reflect-review-and-celebrate  https://www.matherhospital.org/wellness-at-mather/health-wellness/spring-cleaning-5-health-benefits-to-decluttering-your-life/ https://www.myaudience.co.uk/2018/08/14/why-summer-is-a-great-time-to-review-your-business/ https://www.allinahealth.org/healthysetgo/thrive/importance-of-taking-a-vacation#:~:text=Studies%20have%20shown%20that%20taking,more%20motivation%20to%20achieve%20goals.
